Into the Blue

Icefields Parkway, Alberta

I had never seen frost flowers in the wild before, and even though these weren't the biggest, it was still so awesome to see! There was a much larger patch to the north, but the compositions to be found there were much weaker. I loved how these ones hugged the edges of the ice. Ambient temperature was about -20C

Frost flowers are ice crystals commonly found growing on young sea ice and thin lake ice in cold, calm conditions. The ice crystals are similar to hoar frost, and are commonly seen to grow in patches around 3–4 cm in diameter.
